The Mongoose and the Serpent
The Serpent of the Nile
Is the emblem of a Wynne
He wears it to beguile
Lady Luck for all his kin
A golden serpent ring
When a Wynne is twenty-one,
Ah! Then he is a king
Of a world made for his fun!
Now those who marry these proud Wynnes
Should have an emblem too,
Lest all those golden, snaky skins
Soon turn a brassy hue.
What could combat those ruby eyes?
What bow that diamond head?
What could that hissing tongue surprise
Before its say is said?

Why not a plucky mongoose?
He's a match for any snake,
So when the lordly Wynnes cut loose
And Earth and Heaven shake,
The little mongoose starts to fight
He bares his tiny teeth,
"They shall not conquer us, this night
Nor keep us underneath!"
He fights them to a stand still,
The Serpents cry for grace.
Oh Life with a Wynne is grand still,
If you keep him in his place.
